After watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars fans were baffled of Leia hugging Rey instead of Chewbacca after Han Solo died. Chewbacca was Han Solo’s companion way long before he met Leia and fans expect that it should be Chewbacca that Leia will comfort not Rey. Star Wars Episode VII director, J.J. Abrams admitted that he made a mistake.
“That was probably one of the mistakes I made in that”, Abrams said.
“My thinking at the time was that Chewbacca, despite the pain he was feeling, was focused on trying to save Finn and getting him taken care of. So I tried to have Chewbacca go off with him and focus on Rey, and then have Rey find Leia and Leia find Rey. The idea being that both of them being strong with the Force and never having met, would know about each other — that Leia would have been told about her beyond what we saw onscreen and Rey of course would have learned about Leia. And that reunion would be a meeting and a reunion all in one, and a sort of commiseration of their mutual loss.”
Some viewers thought Leia hugged Rey because she already knew her before, and she’s of Skywalker line. Speculations about Rey being given the mission to look for Luke Skywalker also emerged. Why chose Rey over the senior members of the Resistance? Is that because she’s a Skywalker?
Mark Hamill added spice to the brewing rumors that Rey is a Skywalker during a discussion at the Oxford Union. When asked about his relationship with his co-star Daisy Ridley who plays Rey in Star Wars Episode VIII, Hamill said:
“Daisy is incredible, so genuine, appealing, lovable, she beams, she has a wonderful charisma – I adore her… She’s my daughter’s age – and that’s how I relate to her.”
Some thought that Hamill hinted more than Ridley being the same age of his daughter – that her character Rey could be the daughter of Luke Skywalker. You can view the full interview here.
